Exhibition at firstsite showcasing the Coast projects.
For Coast Commissions, photographer John Kippin encompasses the whole coastline often featuring evidence of its military history - a 'coast worth defending'. Neville Gabie makes new work in the Rochford District that explores the inaccessibility of the coast in this area, through video pieces that document the landscape from the air and sea. Elizabeth Wright , currently developing a new proposal for Tendring District, shows images of her original proposal Coach , which was halted earlier this year largely due to local opposition. Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich present a film and radio broadcast exploring the notions of spirituality and science made in response to the site of Bradwell Power Station and St Peter's Chapel, Maldon District.
For Coast Schools, artists Rob Olins, Michael Pinsky and Andrew Smith are currently working with students at three Clacton-on-Sea secondary schools to create artworks that are integrated with the architecture. This exhibition unites their approaches and contexts, introducing work produced by participating pupils. Coast Digital took place in 2003, Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata was commissioned to make a new digital work inspired by Mersea Island, the final piece Mersea Circles was shown at firstsite in December.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

How the Universe Sang Itself into Being

At a remarkable, uncelebrated location between Bradwell Nuclear Power Station and St Peter's Chapel, Zoe Walker & Neil Bromwich investigate notions of spirituality and science through a magical, mirrored boat and new radio station; Celestial Radio. Take a walk along this stretch of unspoilt coastline accompanied by ambient sounds, local conversations and soundtracks that recall the legendary Radio Caroline that once graced these waters. Hog roast, veggie chilli and salad will be served at the launch. BYO drinks, torch and radio, park at the power station, Bradwell Waterside and follow signs.
This site specific artwork continues until 24 August, open 12-5pm daily, collect headphones from start of walk at St Peter's Chapel, Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex.
